What is a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner? The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a registered nurse who has been specially trained to care for the complex issues surrounding victims of sexual assault. The purpose of this training is to teach interested Registered Nurses how to better care for their patients by recognizing, collecting and preserving evidence, interviewing victims and linking them to vital community resources for follow-up. Course Description This 40-hour didactic course is geared towards the Registered Nurse.It is designed to provide a comprehensive education program in the complete assessment, evaluation and treatment of the adult sexual assault survivor.Upon completion of the 40-hour didactic training, there is a post-training clinical requirement that must be completed according to the nurse’s scope of practice and guidelines of the training course. RNs MUST attend ALL five days of the training to receive contact hours.This course meets the educational guidelines of the International Association of Forensic Nurses.
Presenter Shalotta Sharp is a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program Coordinator for acute adult and pediatric sexual assault exams. Responsible for coordinating care of patients reporting sexual assault, scheduling non-acute adult and pediatric exams, coordinating 24/7 forensic nurse call coverage, coordinating care with victim support agencies such as law enforcement, Department of Human Services, and the rape crisis center. Serve as in-house consultant for updating hospital-wide policies and procedures regarding sexual assault practice issues. Clinical practice includes nursing episode of care with forensic photography and sample collection for patients in the Emergency Department reporting sexual assault, with physician collaboration. Fact and expert witness in legal actions regarding sexual assault. |
