10-07 MUFSC Staff Member, Project Featured in Profiles in DNA The NIJ Expert System Testbed Project, or NEST Project, is part of a cooperative agreement between the Marshall University Forensic Science Center (MUFSC) and the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) to evaluate expert systems. Expert systems can rapidly process DNA data to determine final results quickly. This enables them to dramatically improve laboratory efficiency and alleviate case backlogs. Because expert systems mark such a revolutionary development in DNA analysis, the selection of an appropriate system is a critical step for laboratories. NEST Project demonstrations provide lab managers and other personnel with a first-hand look at these software programs to aid in this selection.
