Annex RenderingOn June 6, 2008, construction began on MUFSC’s new Forensic Science Training and Education Annex.  Upon completion, this 16,000 square foot facility will serve as a vital resource to law enforcement personnel, graduate students, entrepreneurs, and the public at large.

The first floor of the annex will include two large classrooms with distance-learning capabilities and two state-of-the-art DNA training laboratories.  The training laboratories will include cutting-edge forensic DNA equipment, such as genetic analyzers and automation robots and will provide graduate students with practical, hands-on laboratory training.  These facilities will also improve MUFSC’s ability to provide advanced DNA and laboratory automation training.

Annex Rending, View of West SideThrough a unique partnership with the Huntington Area Development Council (HADCO), a portion of the building’s second floor will house a technology-focused business incubator.  An important part of Marshall’s strategic vision, this incubator will provide needed laboratory and office space, as well as support services to growing businesses.  The goal of this project is to provide a supportive environment in which University researchers can successfully commercialize their innovative discoveries.  The incubator will consist of three laboratories with adjoining offices which can be rented by interested businesses.  The second floor will also include a dedicated DNA research laboratory.

The third floor will include research and training laboratories in the areas of forensic chemistry and microscopy.  The inclusion of over 1,200 square feet of laboratory space will greatly enhance the academic program’s forensic chemistry emphasis.  The third floor will also feature a dedicated microscopy classroom and space for a scanning electron microscope.  All of which will help prepare students for the ever-changing field of forensic science.

The first phase of the construction project is anticipated to be completed in August of 2009.
